Ostrava is one of the greenest cities in the country, and despite this, it has long been systematically transforming public spaces and building or renewing parks. Work is also continuing on the project documentation for the renewal of the second largest central park, Dr. Milada Horáková Orchard in Ostrava. We invite interested parties to a public discussion of the proposed transformation of the mentioned orchard, which will take place on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 5:00 PM in the exhibition space of the MAPPA studio on Nádražní Street in Ostrava. The proposal will be presented by representatives of the studio Míza architekti, which won the landscape-architectural competition announced by the city of Ostrava and organized by the MAPPA studio in 2022-23.
At the public discussion, the authors will first present their proposal and summarize the current information about the project – for example, the results of the dendrological survey conducted in recent months, or conclusions from discussions with key stakeholders in the area, such as the Jewish community or the Brethren Church and the city hospital. The Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Aleš Boháč, will explain the city's motivation to transform the park: “The Dr. Milada Horáková Orchard is the second largest central park, and its current state is inadequate. There are many institutions located nearby, and people traverse the park towards authorities or the shopping center. The revitalized area of the park will create a bright space with a gazebo for culture, we will restore the water feature, and a promenade will be added. Overall, the place will be more cultivated and will provide facilities for visitors of all ages.”
The upcoming public discussion is intended for the general public. Since the orchard is located near frequently visited and significant buildings, some of which are still being established in the area, it has the potential to serve a large number of people. Its position in the city and size suggest a high attendance, which will be supported by the upcoming revitalization. Thanks to this, the park will be usable for a wide range of activities. Therefore, not only residents from the surrounding area are invited to the discussion, but also visitors from nearby buildings and institutions or public spaces. The orchard can provide facilities and opportunities for relaxation and recreation in the future, or simply improve accessibility on the way through the city.
During the meeting, participants can ask about anything that interests them regarding the transformation of the orchard and also raise their comments on the proposal. Míza architekti will then take these into account while preparing the project documentation. After its completion in the second half of 2028, the completed project will be presented to the public. The project documentation will be followed by a public contract, which should bring the specification of the contractor for the works. The actual implementation of the transformation of the orchard will encompass four consecutive phases. Ideally, the first visitors would be able to enjoy the orchard in 2032. We currently estimate the costs for this project at 250 million crowns.
In recent years, the city has transformed numerous parks and cultivated greenery. For example, we can mention some of the revitalizations, Tyl's Orchard in Silesian Ostrava, the park near the Zábřeh Castle, the park near Bořík in Nová Ves, the Park above the pond in Bělský Les, and others. “We have invested over 60 million crowns into green projects in Bělský Les alone; the Water Path and newly accessible areas via boardwalks are extensively used by people for leisure activities. Accessible water areas have increased, such as the wetlands in Hrabová and the biotope in Hrabůvka. We are continuing the implementation of boardwalks in Bělský Les in the K Jezeru area, as well as the children’s playground on Čujkovova Street in Hrabůvka is successfully growing. A new park is being developed in Polanka nad Odrou, and another is emerging in Radvanice. Children can spend their time moving even on warmer days playing in the forest playground in Hošťálkovice. The revitalization of the Castle Park in Ostrava-Poruba has begun. A complete list of new greenery and revitalized areas in the city would indeed be very long,” concludes Aleš Boháč, Deputy Mayor for the Environment.
