Ostrava - The landscape architecture competition for the transformation of Dr. Milada Horáková Park in Ostrava was won by the studio míza architekti. The park will feature a space with a gazebo for cultural and social activities, a water element will return, and there will be a promenade and an orchard. This was announced today by Zuzana Kotyzová, spokesperson for the City Studio for Spatial Planning and Architecture (MAPPA).
The jury selected from eight proposals. "The design highlights the strengths of the existing park and seamlessly integrates new elements into it. One of these is, for example, a gazebo located on a meadow behind the future new concert hall building, which will allow for the expansion of events by the Janáček Philharmonic and the cultural house into the outdoor space. Other events can also take place here, so the entire meadow will serve as a universal place for social activities," Kotyzová stated.
According to the chairman of the jury and landscape architect Petr Velička, the winning design was particularly appealing for its cohesiveness and quality, as well as its functional connection of the park with its surroundings. "It was also positively evaluated that the proposal does not try to compete with the new concert hall building; on the contrary, it naturally provides the background of a pleasant representative urban garden. The authors also excellently considered all the specifics of the park, whether it concerns its history, the number of artworks located within it, or the current state of vegetation," Velička added.
The design includes a café with toilets to be placed next to the existing playground. The newly established orchard will separate the play area from the rest of the park. More play and relaxation spaces with seating will be created on the edge of the orchard along the urban street 28. října. "Towards the inside, the park opens up into a green landscape interwoven with walking paths. The route of the cycling path running through the park will be adjusted, ensuring a functional connection from Varenská Street to 28. října Boulevard. In the area of the former Jewish cemetery, narrow disappearing paths are proposed, following some routes of the original road network. They thus remind of the history of this place and its memorial significance," Kotyzová added.
Dr. Milada Horáková Park is located near the historical center of Ostrava between the streets 28. října and Varenská and is one of the most important green spaces in the city. There are several institutions nearby, and more are planned to be built in its vicinity. The estimated costs for the transformation of the park are estimated at 250 million crowns excluding VAT. The adjustments could begin in 2026. Interested parties will be able to learn more about the new design of the park at an exhibition of competition proposals organized by the MAPPA studio in its space Za výlohou from the second half of March.
