Ostrava – A new playground and park were opened today in the Ostrava city district of Polanka nad Odrou. The modification of the public space cost more than ten million crowns. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Ostrava city hall, Gabriela Pokorná.
"The design of the new playground was influenced by the slope of the terrain, which was utilized for children's play. New trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses were planted. All surfaces are permeable, using water in the landscape," said the spokesperson.
The transformation of the area, according to the design by architects and landscape designers Magda Cigánková Fialová and Petra Lindovská, began last autumn. The district mayor, Pavel Bochnia (SNK Polanka nad Odrou), stated that safety was especially important for the playground, which is fenced off so that children cannot run into adjacent roads.
"The color scheme of the playground is chosen in warm shades, from yellow to red, to motivate children. The vibrant colors are balanced by the natural tones of wood, the greenery of the plantings, and the muted gray shades of the surfaces and furniture. The play elements support physical activity, creativity, and coordination of children,” said Bochnia.
The authors of the design utilized the sloping terrain and incorporated terrain waves, gentle slopes, and elevations into the play area. "In the revitalized space, open areas for free movement alternate with more compact, partially enclosed zones for specific activities. In addition to classic elements, typically climbing frames, slides, and swings, rope and balance structures and zones for creative play were designed," said Cigánková Fialová.
Part of the modifications also included the revitalization of greenery. Established trees were preserved on-site, the lime avenue was partially lightened, treated, and supplemented with missing trees. "A large number of new plants were planted, and interesting species of trees, flowering shrubs, and perennials were added to the area. This includes 27 trees, 240 square meters of perennial flower beds, and 535 square meters of shrub beds. The combination of evergreen and flowering species of newly planted shrubs will bring year-round effects. In front of the entrance to the sports hall, the mixed beds were complemented by several cherry trees, whose beauty will be admired by people especially in spring,” added the deputy mayor for the environment, Aleš Boháč (Mayors for Ostrava).
