Ostrava - Ostrava has announced another architectural competition for the design of a Memorial to War Veterans, which is to be established in the Čs. letců park in the central city district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz. The memorial is to commemorate veterans of both World Wars as well as modern-day veterans. The city will accept proposals until September 6, spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská informed the journalists today.
Proposals should respect the current layout of the reconstructed park. The space must also allow for commemorative events for about 150 people.
"We repeatedly declare our interest in high-quality public space and present Ostrava as a city of culture. It is therefore a logical step to announce a competition for such an important element as a memorial," said Deputy Mayor Zuzana Bajgarová (ANO).
The city hopes to know the winner of the competition by the end of the year. The jury will evaluate not only the quality of the overall placement of the memorial in the area and the quality of the design but also its economic viability and resilience to weather conditions.
"During discussions with the jury members, we adjusted our original plan; instead of a single-round competition, we have two rounds, and we have also increased the amount for the project's realization. We added an additional 500,000 to the original two million. We also agreed on fees for sketches for the second phase of the competition to make it more attractive for potential authors of proposals," Bajgarová added.
The creators of the three best proposals will receive a monetary reward ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 crowns. All participants in the second phase of the competition who submit a competition proposal and meet the competition conditions will receive a sketch fee of 15,000 crowns. According to the winning proposal, the memorial could begin construction next year.
