Ostrava - Ostrava wants to announce a new architectural competition for the design of the Veterans Memorial by April at the latest. The monument is to be located in the Čs. Letců park in the city center. Some creators will be directly invited to participate in the competition, which will also remain open to other interested parties. From the applications submitted by these interested parties, the judges will select additional participants. This was reported to journalists today by city hall spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská.

The original competition announced last June was canceled by the city in November, despite receiving a total of 27 proposals. However, they did not meet the city’s expectations. Ostrava demanded that the proposals be timeless and honor the memory of veterans from the world wars, as well as those from modern armed conflicts.

"We believe that we will be able to find a solution that will carry a strong message to new generations, but will also be dedicated not only to former veterans but also to modern ones, which many of the submitted proposals lacked,” said Deputy Mayor Zuzana Bajgarová (ANO). In the second half of February, the jury will meet at its inaugural session to refine the conditions and other aspects of the new competition.

Although the city did not choose a winner in the first competition, it has displayed last year's competition proposals in the Refill office space on Českobratrská Street. Interested parties can view them there every weekday until January 30 from 09:00 to 17:00. The exhibition will conclude with a public meeting regarding the competition results. Information about the jury's decision to cancel the competition and its expectations for new proposals will be presented. Throughout February, the exhibition will also be on display at the city hall building.
