Ostrava – The construction of a pavilion for psychiatric care began today at the Faculty Hospital in Ostrava (FNO). The four-storey building, costing 358 million crowns, aims to improve care for adult and pediatric psychiatric patients. Three inpatient departments will be created according to the needs of the patients, said the head of the Psychiatry Department at FNO, Petr Šilhán.

"One department will be for patients with restlessness. One department will be for patients with impaired functioning abilities, primarily the geriatric psychiatric population, and one will focus on treating neurotic personality disorders and addictions," Šilhán stated. Instead of the original 24 beds, the new department will have 66.

The ground floor of the pavilion will feature occupational therapy workshops, a gym, and an office for a physiotherapist. A significant portion of the space will also be dedicated to child psychiatric care, which will allow for a doubling of the number of psychological and psychiatric outpatient clinics. A children's day center will be established for patients aged six to 12. "This will allow for their intensive treatment without the need for hospitalization, and thus without the necessity of uprooting them from their family environment," Šilhán said. The construction will also include a children's playground. The project is expected to take less than two years, during which the department aims to recruit the necessary staff.

Eleven companies applied for the construction tender. The building will be funded from EU resources and the state budget. The psychiatric pavilion will also serve as a teaching facility for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ostrava.
