Karlovy Vary - Karlovy Vary will announce a tender for the project of restoring Goethe's viewpoint. The former excursion restaurant with a viewing tower is to be returned not only to its former appearance but also to its attractiveness. In addition to the building's repair, the city is also preparing a project to utilize the surrounding area of the viewpoint, said ČTK deputy mayor Čestmír Bruštík (independent).
The estimated cost of the project for the restoration of the viewpoint is 1.27 million crowns. However, it may decrease during the tender. The city aims to have the project completed by September so it can be registered among the first in the Integrated Territorial Development Plan, from which it can gain up to 85 percent in grants. The renovation of the building from the late 19th century, designed by architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, is expected to cost up to 20 million crowns.
The city would also like to obtain grants for the modifications of the area around Goethe's viewpoint, presumably from a cross-border grant program. However, the project is still in progress. Among the new features that could be built near the lookout tower are a pheasantry or a bobsled track. Coordination with the city's zoning plan will be necessary for the latter. The estimated costs for modifications of the viewpoint's surroundings are around ten million crowns.
Goethe's viewpoint was originally built as the Crown Princess Stephanie's Viewpoint. In 1918, it changed its name to Stifter-Warte after the writer, painter, and educator Adalbert Stifter. In 1945, it became Stalin's Viewpoint, and eventually, in 1957, it received the name of the German poet Goethe, who visited it during his stays in the spa town.
