Karlovy Vary - The Karlovy Vary observation tower, Goethe's viewpoint, is set for a complete reconstruction. The city will repair this significant monument with the help of European subsidies. It should be completed by autumn next year, Deputy Mayor Čestmír Bruštík (independent) told reporters today. "We managed to select the contractor, the company Metrostav, which will carry out the contract for 33.4 million crowns. It is a comprehensive repair of the tower, including engineering networks. Repairs will start in October 2017 and finish in September 2018," Bruštík specified.
While 85 percent of the construction part of the reconstruction is to be covered by European funding from the Integrated Plan for the Development of the Karlovy Vary Region, the engineering networks will be paid for by the city from its own budget. This will amount to around six million crowns of the total construction cost.
This significant historical monument from the late 19th century, which was built in a pseudo-Gothic style similar to many other buildings in the spa town according to the designs of architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, previously served as an excursion restaurant with a lookout. However, its current technical condition is poor.
The revitalization of Goethe's viewpoint should be further supported by the fact that the municipal spa forests are preparing a project to improve its surroundings. This project is to be financed by Czech-German cross-border grants.
