Karlovy Vary - Today, after a complete reconstruction, the Goethe Viewpoint opened to the public in Karlovy Vary. The cultural monument, built in the 1880s, had been deteriorating for the past 15 years. The repair cost approximately 40 million crowns and was completed last autumn, said Pavel Bouška (Karlovaráci), a councilor from Karlovy Vary to ČTK. "When I was last at the Goethe Viewpoint, it was essentially a life-threatening ruin with crumbling walls. So it's a fundamental renovation of the entire structure, including the adjustment of the surroundings," said Bouška. The repaired viewpoint is operated by Karlovy Vary Spa Forests. It will initially be open on weekends from 12:00 to 17:00, added councilor Hana Zemanová (Karlovaráci). The facility will have restrooms available, and visitors will be able to purchase basic refreshments, such as non-alcoholic beverages and pastries. There will be no entrance fee. Near the viewpoint, the Ghost Trail begins. The approximately three-kilometer loop towards Tři kříže and back is lined with models of various forest creatures placed on the ground and in the trees. The use of the viewpoint is currently limited by the fact that the city used a European grant for the reconstruction. For five years, commercial operations will not be possible. In the future, additional attractions may emerge in the vicinity. The viewpoint was originally named after Princess Stefanie, the wife of Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf of Habsburg, who was very taken with the view of the spa town's center. The lookout tower changed names over the years and has only borne the name of the German poet, who frequently stayed in the town, since 1957.
