Brno-north plans the renovation of the functionalist school building on Agricultural Street

Brno - The city council of the Brno-north district plans to renovate the functionalist building of Masaryk Primary and Nursery School on Zemědělská Street. The building was designed in 1931 by architect Mojmír Kyselka and is a listed monument. The aim of the reconstruction, which is estimated to cost about 65 million crowns, is to bring the school's appearance into the present day while preserving the architect's signature, said the district's deputy mayor Martin Glogar (KDU-ČSL) to reporters today.

According to the deputy mayor, the school on Zemědělská Street is one of the most valuable buildings of Brno's functionalism. Kyselka built it as Masaryk's Elementary School on a neighboring plot next to the German Elementary School, where he collaborated with Bohuslav Fuchs. The building is a cultural heritage site, and its reconstruction requires a sensitive approach, according to Glogar.

The city district has been preparing the project for the school's reconstruction since 2024. "We wanted to prepare the project so that the reconstruction respects the historical value of the building and at the same time brings the school into the 21st century. We took the reconstruction of Masaryk Student House on Cihlářská as a model example," Glogar stated.

The work will include repairs to the roof, facade, and windows. "We want to return the metal windows, but there will also be external shutters, because it can get very hot in the classrooms as early as May," Glogar noted. He added that all modifications are being consulted with heritage protectors.

In addition to the school on Zemědělská Street, the council is also planning modifications to nursery schools on Brechtova and Slavíčkova Streets. Each of the reconstructions is expected to cost about 30 million crowns, according to Glogar. The council is applying for a European grant exceeding 22 million crowns for all three projects.
