Prague – At the age of 81, sculptor Anna Chromy, originally from the Czech Republic, passed away on Saturday in Monaco. Renata Sabongui, a music producer who collaborated with Anna Chromy, informed ČTK today. In the Czech Republic, her sculpture near the Estates Theatre, resembling an empty cloak, and figures adorning the fountain at the nearby Senovážné Square in Prague are well-known.
In addition to Prague, the same sculpture of the empty cloak can also be found in Salzburg, Athens, and other locations. Four years ago, a statue of composer Franz Schubert by this artist was unveiled in the garden of the Liechtenstein Palace in Prague, the residence of the Faculty of Music and Dance of the Academy of Performing Arts.
Despite spending most of her life abroad, in France, Italy, and Monaco, Anna Chromy always enjoyed returning to the Czech Republic, said Sabongui. In 2016, she was awarded honorary citizenship of Prague 1. Sabongui mentioned today that Chromy will be partially buried in Monaco, while another urn will be placed in the family tomb in Salzburg, where a memorial mass will also be held.
Anna Chromy was born on July 18, 1940, in Český Krumlov. At the end of World War II, her family moved to Austria, where Anna studied ballet. After her marriage, she moved to Paris and began studying art, becoming intrigued by surrealism and citing Salvador Dalí as her inspiration.
Since 1980, she lived with her husband in Monte Carlo.
