Brno - The repairs of one of the most famous squares in Brno, Zelný trh in the historical center of the city, will begin in October. Brno city councilors have approved the announcement of a tender for the company that will carry out the reconstruction for 52 million. This information was provided to ČTK by the spokesperson of the magistrate, Pavel Žára. Due to the repairs, the markets for which it is known and popular will disappear from the square. Zelný trh will have new paving, the water features will be repaired, benches, lighting, and greenery will be added. The repairs are expected to last 13 months according to the plan. The underground of Zelný trh has already undergone reconstruction in previous years, and there are now accessible paths for tourists. "The completed reconstruction of the underground is followed by the final reconstruction of the surface, namely the hardened areas, the roadway, and the sidewalks, as well as the engineering networks. The urban furniture will be restored and supplemented, and landscaping works will be carried out," stated Žára. People will be able to shop at the markets in the square this year until the end of the year; according to the mayor of Brno-střed, Libor Šťástka (ODS), the popular Christmas markets in the style of a traditional winter will also be held to a limited extent. After that, the vendors with their stalls will move to Moravské náměstí. The reconstruction will start in the fall in the outer parts of the square and will move to the center in subsequent phases. The granite fountain standing in the middle of the square will also undergo modifications; it will have a new column made of light sandblasted granite with a bronze valve. In front of the Moravian Museum, there will be three new fountains, and 22 benches will be added throughout the square. The city hall will plant trees along the perimeter; until now, the square has been without greenery due to its market nature.
