Karlovy Vary - The new railway station building at the Upper Station in Karlovy Vary will operate in a provisional mode for several months after its opening. The reason is the commencement of work on the station area, which includes the construction of an underpass. The building will begin to serve partially from the end of April, said Marek Illiaš, spokesman for the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC). "The building will be operational by the end of April immediately after provisional ticket offices are built for passengers on the ground floor. These construction modifications are a result of the initiation of the modernization of the station area," stated Illiaš.
A provisional drywall partition will be constructed on the ground floor to separate the construction area, where the construction company will break through a new underpass to the dispatch building. "This partition is intended to prevent the intrusion of dust and noise into areas where the public will be moving," added Illiaš.
The restrictions will last, according to the SŽDC spokesman, until the end of August. After that, the first platform will be in such a condition that passengers will be able to use it again, and the new building will be fully operational.
The spa town waited many years for the new railway station building. The modern glass building, costing about 96 million crowns, replaced a station that was already devastated and inadequate. The city will follow up the completion of the building with the construction of a footbridge over the rail yard and the adjustment of the area in front of the station.
