Karlovy Vary - The start of construction at the upper train station in Karlovy Vary will be delayed by about a month due to administrative obstacles. The long-awaited demolition of the building and the construction of a modern new one is set to begin around mid-April, said Lubor Hrubeš, director of the construction administration for the West of the Czech Railways (SŽDC), to ČTK. "The project is currently just about to sign the contract. I expect the signing to take place at the beginning of April, and the construction will thus start in mid-April. Completion will then be according to the schedule in about a year," said Hrubeš. The new train station building in the spa town has been awaited for years. The project was originally prepared by the Czech Railways, but it will ultimately be realized by SŽDC. The new building, according to the design by architect Petr Franta, will replace a structure that was built temporarily after World War II, at the end of which the station was almost destroyed by bombing. After the completion of the new station building, work on the station part of the project will also continue. This is expected to be completed in 2017. "The entire old building will be demolished in halves. First, half of the structure will come down, and all employees will be moved to the other half. Then we will build the new building, relocate the employees, and demolish the rest," described the progress of the work spokesperson for SŽDC Jakub Ptačinský.
