Kadaň (Chomutovsko) - The town hall tower in Mírové náměstí in Kadaň has undergone renovation. Initially, the city planned to repair the facade, but it also had to repair the walkway. A more detailed inspection revealed that it was already considerably dilapidated. Thanks to the repair costing 2.4 million crowns, tourists can once again climb the tower and enjoy the view of the historical center of the town. Jiří Kulhánek (ODS), the mayor of Kadaň, said this to ČTK today. "We finished work on our beautiful, white town hall tower around mid-August. We were carrying out repairs to the cladding and also the walkway because water was leaking into the walkway and damaging the inner part of it. Eventually, the water reached the facade, and some parts of the tower were so destroyed that they had to be removed and replaced. So we carried out a complete renovation and drainage of the walkway, and we hope that our tower remains this white for at least twenty years," said Kulhánek.
The renovation of the tower was initially supposed to be completed before the start of the summer holidays, but it was extended precisely due to the necessity of repairing the walkway as well. For the same reason, the work became about 800,000 crowns more expensive. However, the tower is now again accessible to visitors. This year, Kadaň is managing a budget of 414 million crowns, with 130 million crowns allocated from the budget for investment projects.
The white Gothic town hall tower is the tallest building in Kadaň at a height of 53.7 meters. The main part of the tower was constructed before 1402, when the arched chapel on the first floor of the tower is mentioned for the first time in the sources. In the 16th century, the tower was modified and completed by Petr Hündt. Stone artifacts, the walkway, and the brick helmet with terracotta crabs at the edges date back to this construction phase. The tower will be accessible to the public on weekends until the end of September this year, and it will reopen again in the spring.
