Hradec Králové, June 1 (ČTK) - Builders under the revamped Mileta intersection in Hradec Králové opened a key underpass connecting the city center and the university campus with the university hospital and the largest housing estate in Hradec, Moravské Předměstí. Construction manager Petr Mareš said this to ČTK today. Along with the underpass, connecting roads and a new municipal transport stop for the Faculty Hospital UK on Zborovská Street opposite the headquarters of the medical rescue service also began operation today.

Thousands of people walk daily along the route between the city center and the hospital. Until now, they had to cross the four-lane road in Sokolská Street at the pedestrian crossing near the main entrance to the faculty hospital and walk or drive about 800 meters. Many people shortened their journey by riskily crossing the road.

The reconstruction of the traffic light-controlled intersection for 634 million crowns began in April 2024, and vehicular traffic returned to it at the end of April this year. The construction aims to enhance safety and speed up traffic at the intersection, through which tens of thousands of cars pass daily, especially with the help of four underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists under the arms of the intersection.

The underpass under the arm of the intersection to the city center has been in use since last autumn. The remaining two underpasses under the intersection are expected to be opened by the builders at the turn of July and August, Mareš stated.

Builders are still working at Mileta. By the turn of July and August, they intend to complete the connection of the intersection to Benešova Avenue and finish the two-lane strip along the base of the medical rescue service. Subsequently, the builders will finish the landscape modifications. All work at Mileta is expected to be completed with landscaping modifications by April 2027. The construction is a joint investment by the Road and Motorway Directorate, Hradec Králové Region, and the city.
