Prague – Historian, theorist, critic, and educator Milena Bartlová has received the Award of the Art History Society (UHS) for her lifetime achievement. The Josef Krása Award for young researchers was won by art historian Jan Wollner. UHS awarded both prizes on Friday during the meeting of its general assembly. At the same time, its members agreed on the unacceptability of the proposed amendment to the building law. Tomáš Klička informed ČTK about this in a press release for the society today.

Milena Bartlová
According to UHS, with which she was involved at its inception in 1992, Bartlová is among the most prominent representatives in the history of art and has significantly contributed to the shaping of the field. The rector of the Academy of Art, Design, and Architecture Tomáš Pospiszyl stated during the award ceremony, according to Klička, that Bartlová has the experience of a medievalist who increasingly lives in the present.

According to UHS, Bartlová transitioned from medieval art through the history of the field to critically examining the relationship between art and society. The art history professor is, in addition to professional texts, an author of cultural and political works, is socially active, and collaborates with Czech Radio. She was born in 1958 and has studied at many universities, including the Humboldt University of Berlin. Since 2011, she has been teaching at the AAAD (Art and Design School).

Jan Wollner
Wollner, born in 1986, received the Josef Krása Award for the book "Bratři Núňezové" (The Núñez Brothers), published last year by the AAAD about his students. He also organized an exhibition about them last year.

According to Klička, the general assembly of UHS agreed on Friday on the unacceptability of the amendment to the building and heritage law currently being discussed in the Chamber of Deputies. "It is alarming to ignore heritage care within the building process, the shortened deadlines, and the absence of expert voices. The result will not be more accessible housing, but rather the destruction of preserved values," UHS stated in response to the resolution of the general assembly.

The Art History Society is a professional organization bringing together Czech and international historians and art historians. In addition to supporting research in the history of art and architecture, it aims to respond to current social and cultural challenges.
