Prague - Prague councilors approved a grant of 25 million crowns for the restoration of Strelecky Island in Prague. Prague 1 has been planning the revitalization of the island in the city center for several months. A few weeks ago, they announced a tender worth 90 million crowns. The leadership had previously claimed that the work would cost around 40 million crowns. According to spokeswoman Veronika Blažková, however, at that time they were only discussing the first phase. The project, which the town hall has been preparing since the last election term, has been long criticized by the opposition Public Affairs party. According to councilor Kateřina Klasnová, it is "quite generous" and the planned investments are "exaggerated." "The island is not missing anything essential," she stated. "It should retain its natural character. It is a unique piece of forest in the middle of the river," she added. The town hall has postponed the restoration for months also due to the planned tree felling, which has faced opposition in the past. In the recently announced tender, tree removal has again appeared, but it does not specify how many will be removed. However, the tender includes replacement planting. The town hall spokesperson said that two children's playgrounds would be created on the island, paths would be repaired, lawns would be restored, and lighting would be replaced. "Complete infrastructure for organizing cultural and social events will be added," she said. The park will gain toilets, benches, and trash cans, and restorers will repair the steps from the Legií bridge. A significant item in the budget will be an elevator, which will allow access for people with disabilities. The work could be completed in the spring of next year.
