An ambitious project has emerged in the West Bohemian town of Sokolov, attracting attention not only from experts in the automotive industry but also from the general public. BMW Group has built a testing polygon here, focused primarily on the development and testing of autonomous vehicles and electric cars. The goal is to create a modern technological center for the development of autonomous driving, alternative drives, and digitalization.

Revolution in autonomous driving and electromobility

The BMW test track in Sokolov is one of the most modern facilities of its kind and, according to BMW spokesperson David Haidinger, the largest test track of the BMW Group in the world. The area spans 600 hectares of former spoil heap and, in addition to the test track, includes administrative buildings, workshops, warehouses, and other necessary infrastructure. Various types of test tracks and simulations of real road situations are spread throughout the area. This allows for testing all aspects of vehicle operation – from urban traffic to highways to extreme conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on autonomous driving technologies, where vehicles do not require direct control by the driver, and on electromobility, which is a key component of BMW's sustainable development strategy.

Highly sophisticated technologies enable the simulation of various climatic conditions, including rain, snow, or extreme temperatures. Developers can effectively test how autonomous systems and electric vehicles behave in a wide range of situations. Additionally, the track is equipped with advanced sensor and communication infrastructure that allows for rapid data collection and analysis during testing.

Modern Facilities for Top-Level Research

In the administrative center of the track, the safe and modern supply of electrical power was ensured by the electrical installation company ATICO, which relied on a comprehensive electrical installation from Hager. The complexity of the portfolio was a factor in the selection of components from this German-French manufacturer, as practically all electrical installations could be provided by the products of a single brand, as well as the technically advanced solutions supplied by Hager, and not least the quality consulting and service from the Hager team during both the design phase and the actual installation and commissioning. The administrative center is under the supervision of Hager's installation and protective devices housed in univers cabinet switchgear. The cabling is neatly routed through hundreds of meters of steel-sheet window trunking with socket modules. Hidden under the floor, the cabling is distributed through floor channels and where it is practical, it is brought to the surface using floor boxes. All of these solutions belong to the family of products from the electrical giant Hager.

The building is controlled by an intelligent KNX system, which represents a globally recognized standard for building and home automation. Hager KNX-based components were used in this project within the facilities of the track – the intelligent electrical installation takes care of the operation of lights and blinds, not only through push-button switches but also partially automatically, for example using motion and presence sensors. The end electrical installation elements – switches, sockets, and other electrical devices – were selected in the lumina intense design in black and white.

Strategic Importance and Environmental Aspects of the Track

The location of the track in Sokolov is not coincidental. The site in the Karlovy Vary region offered not only ample space but also a favorable strategic position near the borders with Germany. The construction of the track supported the development of local infrastructure. For a region that previously struggled with the decline of coal mining and sought a new economic vision, the presence of BMW is a huge opportunity.

Moreover, BMW emphasizes sustainability even during the operation of the test center. In addition to utilizing renewable energy sources and an environmentally friendly approach to the construction of the track, the company strives to minimize negative impacts on the environment throughout the region. This consideration for ecological aspects of its operations is another link that BMW and Hager share. The Hager Group has also committed to effective measures in the areas of environmental protection, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable practices. Hager plays a significant role in the future of the automotive industry through its considerable contribution to the development and manufacture of charging stations for electric vehicles. Thomas Grund, director of Hager Electro's Czech branch, explains: "Business and sustainability can go hand in hand. Hager was founded 70 years ago as a purely family company and this year we celebrated 30 years of operation in the Czech market. As a family business that cares about people, the environment, and the condition in which we pass on our planet to future generations, we are committed to continuously reducing our environmental impact together with our customers and partners."

The Future of the Automotive Industry

Autonomous driving technology and electromobility are considered key factors in the future development of the automotive industry. "The test track in Sokolov is another step towards making autonomous transportation a common part of our lives one day," reflects Thomas Grund. "We are proud to have been part of the construction of this unique research center. The track in Sokolov also represents an opportunity for collaboration with universities and other research institutions, which can further accelerate the development of technologies and bring new talent into the automotive industry and who knows – perhaps also into other technological fields including electrical installations," he concludes with a smile.
