Prague - The long-delayed repair of Štvanice Island could begin next year. Prague 1 is currently negotiating with the designer to reduce the costs of the planned project. Mayor of Prague 1, Oldřich Lomecký (TOP 09), stated this at a press conference today. They aim to save money on repairs in the southern part of the island. The city hall still intends to connect the island with a barrier-free lift from the Legií Bridge.

Prague 1 has been planning the repair of Štvanice Island for several years. The total reconstruction was originally planned to cost around 40 million crowns. New surfaces and benches should be constructed on the island. The current city hall leadership wants to lower the price. "Some things there were unnecessary, and besides," Lomecký said. According to him, Prague 1 will not allocate money for repairing the southern part of the island, which is private.
Representatives of the city hall are therefore negotiating with the designer about where savings can be made. In general, according to Lomecký, projects are overpriced because authors’ fees are calculated based on the costs of the project. They therefore use unnecessarily expensive technologies. "We need to define where the limit of improvement is. We all need transportation by cars or buses, but not everyone has to ride in a Rolls-Royce," the mayor noted.
The savings will not affect the planned construction of the barrier-free lift. This lift is intended to provide access to the island for wheelchair users, who currently find it difficult to attend concerts there. "The final design of the lift is being discussed with heritage conservationists," Lomecký said. They previously opposed the alteration of the appearance of the protected Legií Bridge.
Whether Prague 1 will start the reconstruction next year will depend on the final form of the budget.
