Prague - Střelecký Island is set to transform into a recreational area. New paths and a children's playground are planned to be created, along with the addition of benches and the improvement of greenery. The plan also includes the construction of barrier-free access to the island and the establishment of refreshment facilities, Mayor Petr Hejma (ODS) told reporters today. The overall restoration of the island could cost around 20 million crowns.
Currently, only healthy individuals can access Střelecký Island without difficulty via the stairs from the Legions Bridge. Even mothers with strollers face challenges. However, the first two proposals for building an elevator were rejected by municipal heritage protectors. Hejma stated that their stance is now changing.
The plan to build refreshment facilities is also stirring debate. "It will change the views of the city, especially from Charles Bridge,” heritage protector Josef Štulc told today's Lidové noviny. The island is also in a floodplain, and if the municipal government promoted construction, it would violate the law according to water management experts.
City officials disagree with the criticisms.
