Liberec - A new statue was added today in the center of Liberec. Its author, sculptor Jaroslav Róna, named it Edison; his work is also a functional lamp that will illuminate the otherwise cold paved courtyard between Edvard Beneš Square and the Plaza shopping center. This will not be his only creation in Liberec; next year, the sculpture Little Martian will appear in the vicinity of the mountain hotel Ještěd. Ivona Raimanová, the director of the company Spacium, which focuses on the installation of new sculptures in Liberec, told ČTK today.

According to her, Róna was inspired by a street lamp that architect Emil Králíček illuminated nearly a century ago, the so-called Adam's pharmacy on Wenceslas Square in Prague. "It is the only cubist lamp in the world, and Róna has always been fascinated by it," noted Raimanová, adding that since then, no one has seemingly created an artistically designed lamp.
Róna's Edison, a slim, sophisticated metal lamp with an orange dome, is postmodern. The space where Spacium placed it has been revitalized, while also giving it a kind of intimacy. "It creates the illusion that it is an artistic artifact exhibited as in a gallery," Raimanová remarked.
The fifty-two-year-old Róna is a painter, sculptor, amateur actor, and writer. In 1987, he was a founding member of the art group Tvrdohlaví, which met in Liberec. He is the author of the monument to Franz Kafka, unveiled in 2003 in Prague's Old Town. Two years ago, he realized the sculpture David and Goliath in Cheb. His works are held in prestigious galleries worldwide.
The company Spacium was established eight years ago. It aims to make Liberec a city of sculptures, where visual art will be an integral part of life. In Liberec, they have already installed Milan Houser's Sphere in front of the Golden Lion hotel and several temporary installations in front of the North Bohemian Museum. A traveling Chair stood in front of the town hall, followed by the Sparrows by sculptor Martina Niubo, and then Houser's glass Cube. Another work will appear there next year. The bus stop near the library became the so-called Breakfast of Giants by David Černý, and at the tram stop near the Lípa cinema, there is a bench named Eternal Tenderness by Lukáš Rittstein. Spacium also organized an open-air exhibition in the streets of the city, but had to end it prematurely due to vandalism.
