Brno - Czech Television (ČT) has announced a contract for the construction of a new studio in Brno, which will be built on the site of the former Zetor in the Líšeň district. The estimated cost is 340 million crowns. According to ČT spokesperson Michaela Fričová, construction could begin as early as November and be completed by March 2015, she told ČTK. However, the deadlines depend on the smooth progress of the selection process.
In mid-May, the ČT Council also approved the announcement of the contract. According to the original plans, the new studio was expected to cost up to 600 million crowns, but two years ago ČT revised the project and brought the cost down to 350 to 400 million crowns. They postponed the construction of a studio that is to be part of the facility for a later date. For now, they will use the current studio in Židenice, as well as warehouses and other buildings in the area.
Since the current premises in the city center at the Typos Palace have been provisional since the very beginning in 1961, the new studio will significantly simplify operations. Typos was originally an apartment building, and over the years it has gradually been adapted to meet the needs of the growing studio, but it has never been able to fully accommodate them.
A complex of studios and other spaces for the production and broadcasting of programs will be created in Líšeň; ČT currently employs around 250 staff in Brno. "It was investigated whether it would be possible to reconstruct Typos, but it would turn out to be more expensive than a new building, and we would have to operate elsewhere for two years. The new studio will be built according to television logistics," said Karel Burian, the director of the Brno studio, to ČTK last September.
Once the current studio finally reaches the end of its usability, ČT will offer it for sale.
