Vienna in Venice: social housing at this year's Architecture Biennale

On May 10, the Italian city of Venice will kick off the international architecture exhibition Biennale Architettura 2025, where the Austrian representation will focus on the theme of better living. This year's edition of one of the largest exhibitions, which is held every two years alternating with the Biennale Arte, will run until November 23.

How could living conditions improve in the future? This is the question addressed by the project "Agency for Better Living", which will be presented by the Austrian pavilion at the 19th edition of the world exhibition Biennale Architettura 2025. The curatorial trio of Sabine Pollak, Michael Obrist, and Lorenzo Romito will offer an inspiring vision of the future of housing. The expert jury decided on their proposal last autumn based on a competition announced by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Public Service, and Sport.

The curatorial team builds its concept on the confrontation of two very different approaches – the iconic model of social housing in Vienna and civic initiatives in Rome. "In our contribution, we generally address the question of what a better life in the future could look like. We want to learn from proven systems such as social housing construction in Vienna, but also from projects organized by civil society, as seen in Rome. This comparison can, in our opinion, help find new answers to how to live better,” state the curators.

The search for new housing solutions has been a key topic for Vienna for over a hundred years. Newly built or emerging neighborhoods today serve as models of comprehensive urban development and inspiration for other cities – each offering a different approach to urban living, ecology, and community coexistence. "Vienna is considered an international metropolis of social housing. Delegations and experts from all over the world come to the city almost daily to personally get acquainted with the Viennese model and draw inspiration from it,” adds Vienna's councillor for housing construction, Kathrin Gaál.

The project representing Austria at this year's biennale has received significant support from the City of Vienna, which is also involved in the extensive accompanying program. From the end of May until November, the Austrian pavilion in Venice will transform into a lively discussion forum dedicated to current and future challenges in housing. Under the motto "better living," thematic events, workshops, and lectures will be held here twice a month. The discussions will involve visitors to the exhibition and experts from Vienna and around the world. Documentation of the program will subsequently be available online.
