Liberec – The reconstruction of the first-republic cinema in Turnov in the Semily region into a veterans' museum has won the competition for the Building of the Year of the Liberec Region. The project received the main award, which has borne the name of the hotel and transmitter Ještěd's author, architect Karel Hubáček, since 2019. The jury appreciated the sensitive reconstruction of the former cinema, which connects the atmosphere of an open space with a new way of use, said the region's spokesperson Andrea Fulková today.
The project, which externally respects the historical character of the building and remains accessible to the public thanks to its new use and café, also won in the Reconstruction category. "The most beautiful thing about the reconstruction of the former cinema in Turnov into an exhibition space and café is that the original public space has been transformed into something new with a new function, but at the same time, the building remains accessible to the public. It's nice to see that even a private investor thinks about it this way," said Governor Martin Půta (Mayors for the Liberec Region).
This year's competition jury assessed 25 buildings, six more than last year, as well as seven student projects. The governor also has his own award, which recognized the new section of the Greenway Jizera cycle path between Železný Brod and Líšný. "It's a testament to the persistence and stubbornness of the investor, namely the town of Železný Brod and its mayor (František) Lufinka. This award is actually a reward, because about eight years ago, it seemed that this construction would never be placed between the Jizera River and the railway track," Půta commented on his choice.
Two projects from the Liberec Region were also awarded – in the New Buildings category, the new house for disabled people Na Vinici in Semily won, and in the Public Space, Water, and Landscape category, the new Liberec waterfront won. "Public investors have always historically set the standard, and I think that in the case of public space, it is important for municipalities, towns, and regions to strive to make things beautiful, because that sets the standard for private investors. It will be hard to persuade private investors to do nice things if we don’t do it ourselves," Půta added.
Among the student projects, the proposal for the conversion of the former municipal baths in Jablonec into a municipal library won. The public traditionally selects its favorite, with the highest number of votes going to the Revitalization of Mírové Square in Nové Město pod Smrkem, which received 651 votes. The JUNIOR public award went to the project for the reconstruction of Valdštejnské houses in Liberec. The Ministry of Industry and Trade recognized the reconstruction of the glassworks in Jablonec nad Nisou, while the jury awarded its prize to the façade repair of an apartment building in Rychnov near Jablonec nad Nisou.
