CaixaForum in Madrid by H&deM

Photographs from the construction of the cultural center CaixaForum in Madrid are starting to appear on the internet. Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the former power station in 2001, and they are expected to complete it this year. Only the outer shell of the original industrial hall remains, which has been given a new purpose and has also expanded underground and above the roof. H&deM is not afraid to dramatically alter the structure during their reconstruction efforts, using new materials and forms, which however are approved by the heritage conservationists.
The cultural center was separated from the botanical garden and the busy street by only a few old garages, which ultimately made way for a small square creating a representative entrance. CaixaForum is strategically located between the Reina Sofia Museum (Jean Nouvel), the Museo del Prado, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Rafael Moneo). Link>
