Pardubice - The city of Pardubice is preparing a more comprehensive renovation of part of Míru Square, which will include the addition of greenery such as tall grasses, perennials, and shrubs or smaller trees. Jiřina Klčová (ANO), the deputy mayor, told ČTK. The street is a pedestrian zone lined with shops and cafes. The city hall repaired two sections in 2022 and 2023.
The third section from the intersection with Sladkovského Street towards the Republic Square is awaiting renovation. The city has been facing difficulties with Míru Square since the completion of its general reconstruction in 2014. During rains, the gravel between the granite paving stones washes out, causing them to shift and break. Public transport has been worsened due to the method of laying the paving stones being unsuitable for vehicle traffic. Therefore, as of December 2023, city trolleybuses do not operate there.
"Part of Míru Square has been nicely renovated, but the area in front of the Bajer café is in very poor condition. When it rains, the underlying material washes away. According to information from the city district, refilling with gravel is a short-term solution. The cubes break more easily. Riding a bike there after rain is very dangerous," said opposition councilor Petr Klimpl (ODS) to ČTK.
The city does not want to immediately embark on the renovation of Míru Square; it needs to negotiate its new form. This is also linked to the planned renewal of Republic Square. "We would like to create a green strip along the axis of the road, which would make the area more pleasant in the hot summer months. The preparation of the project will take some time, and we are also coordinating it with the upcoming major reconstruction of Republic Square. Our goal is for the renovation of Míru Square to be more significant than just a repair while also enhancing its recreational and leisure function," stated deputy mayor Jan Hrabal (ANO).
According to deputy mayor Klčová, placing greenery in the city is difficult. There are utility networks under the sidewalks that cannot be destroyed. Additionally, city architects have differing opinions on where green strips would be appropriate.
"However, we are currently discussing with the mayor about building a green strip on Míru Square. This is prompted by the fact that trolleybuses will be relocated and therefore we do not need such a wide traffic lane; space will only be needed for emergency services and transport access," said the deputy mayor.
The planting of tall grasses, perennials, shrubs, and small trees that do not require deep rooting is being considered. "We have contacted the original architect of the Míru Square reconstruction, Mr. Walter, and are discussing how to proceed. I believe that during the summer we could have a clearer idea of how to realize our vision," Klčová added.
