Brno - The city's effort to fill the unused spaces under the Janáček Theatre in Brno with a gastronomy operation has failed. Although the council decided last May to offer the spaces for business, no suitable candidates were found. The city leadership has thus returned to the project of an educational center that the National Theatre Brno has been pursuing. After presenting a refined proposal, the plan received support today, the magistrate informed in a press release. The theatre director Martin Glaser told ČTK that this is "a step in the right direction."

Initially, the city had planned to ideally fill the spaces with a restaurant, café, or similar establishment. However, none of the interested parties' offers met the requirements, leading to a return to the educational center project. It will now be necessary to develop an investment plan for the modification of the spaces.

"We are glad that the city finally decided on the plan we presented in 2019. For institutions of our type, it is extremely important to have a wide range of accompanying programs," said Glaser. The theatre already has an architectural study and content plan prepared. "We can guarantee that once the space opens, it will start operating at full capacity. It is also important for the I.V. Psota Ballet School, which will be able to accept more applicants. In addition to educational activities, we plan to have a theatre café with a view of the park, which will create a new nice space for Brno residents," added the director.

The center will also serve other cultural subsidized organizations, such as the Brno Philharmonic or the Centre for Experimental Theatre. The estimated costs for project documentation and equipment are in the range of several million crowns, while the estimated costs for construction are tens of millions of crowns.
