Curych: Support for social diversity and community life

Questions of coexistence and complex relationships between housing and the city have been a constant theme of the work of the Swiss studio Müller Sigrist Architekten since its founding in 2001. Their projects seek ways to connect housing with commercial and cultural functions in a sustainable and prospective manner. With the return of collectivity, shared economy, and participation in architecture, new possibilities open up in their creations while searching for affordable housing that supports social diversity and community life in the city.
Co-founder Pascal Müller will present strategies and implementations that connect quality solutions and an emphasis on community functioning: the multifunctional residential and commercial block Kalkbreite in Zurich and the "mehr als wohnen" (More than housing) ensemble. While the first project uniquely connects life with urban infrastructure through the construction above an operating tram depot and offers a diverse range of typologies from clustered apartments to shared spaces, the second, in which the studio implemented three buildings, is an example of the transformation of an industrial zone into an inclusive urban neighborhood.
The studio was founded in 2001 by Pascal Müller and Peter Sigrist, and their work, including the award-winning conversion of the Felix Platter hospital in Basel, has been published in two monographs by the prestigious publisher Quart Verlag (2008 and 2021). Pascal Müller, a graduate of ETH Zurich with experience from Berlin and Ireland, has served as a visiting professor at HEPIA in Geneva and BFH in Bern and regularly sits on the juries of international architectural competitions.

The lecture will be followed by a screening of the documentary Brunaupark. The film maps the three-year struggle of the residents of a Zurich housing estate who refuse to become mere items in an investment portfolio and, with unyielding determination, confront the uncertain fate of their homes.
The lecture starts at 19:00, followed by the film screening at 21:00. It is necessary to purchase a separate ticket for the screening; alternatively, a discounted entry can be obtained when purchasing a package for both events (lecture + screening) within the Archivečer program.
