Brno - The South Moravian Region is preparing a contract worth 127 million crowns for the modernization of Brno Airport in Tuřany. This is expected to ensure greater safety and protection for the international airport, which serves both passenger and cargo transport. The regional council approved the plan last week, reported the region's spokesperson Denisa Kapitančiková. The plan includes the construction of an extension and a superstructure of the arrivals terminal. A new building is also set to be created, where the Fire Rescue Service will relocate. Minor constructions include roofing the service entrance and connecting to the existing transport infrastructure of the airport, engineering facilities, internal communications, stormwater drainage, and fencing. It is anticipated that the constructions will be completed by mid-2015 and will be co-financed from the Regional Operational Program Southeast. Last year, Brno Airport handled 535,000 passengers, which was a slight decrease compared to the previous record year. Regular flights operate from here to London, Moscow, Eindhoven, and during the summer season to Milan. The airport is seeking additional destinations that could potentially be accessed from Brno via major global airports. One good option is Milan; however, according to the airport director Tomáš Plaček, it is more challenging to find a carrier.
