Madrid – The Barcelona Temple of the Holy Family (Sagrada Familia) reached its highest point today. Workers installed the upper part of the cross on the tower of Jesus Christ, which now rises to a height of 172.5 meters, Spanish media report. The tower will be officially opened on June 10, to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí, who designed the temple.

Sagrada Familia has had the tallest church tower in the world since last year after the first part of the cross was installed, which was completed today. It thus surpassed a record held for several centuries by the cathedral in Ulm, Germany. However, the tallest tower of the temple, which has been under construction since the end of the 19th century, will not exceed the height of the Montjuic hill in Barcelona, which is 177 meters tall.

Builders still need to complete the interior of the tower, with its opening to the public scheduled for June 10. Representatives of the builders had previously invited Pope Leo XIV to the ceremonial opening, who is expected to visit Spain this year. The Vatican has not yet confirmed the pope's attendance.

The unfinished temple is one of the most visited landmarks in Spain. In 2024, it was visited by around 4.8 million people. Admission fees are one of the main sources of funding for the construction.
