Hradec Králové - The City of Hradec Králové has begun preparing for the reconstruction of the monumentally protected Gočár staircase from 1911. It will start with a several-month survey of the structure. The results of the survey will serve as a basis for the processing of project documentation for the repair, which should also provide an estimate of the project's cost. This was stated today by the city hall spokesperson Kateřina Rohlíčková. The staircase in the style of individualistic modernism connects Komenského Street with the Great Square in the historical center of the city. It underwent its last renovation in 1995 and now requires another repair.
The city's technical services will erect scaffolding on the three-armed staircase, which is made of reinforced concrete, in the coming days. The scaffolding will, among other things, enable a detailed examination of the actual condition of the staircase. The surveys will be conducted by structural engineers, conservationists, and architects. The passage under the scaffolding will remain preserved.
The reinforced concrete staircase was designed by architect Josef Gočár on the site of the demolished inn U Zlatého beránka and the Kropáčky tower. A prominent feature of the staircase is the semicircular arch with suspended lighting and a wall with prism ribs.
"Gočár's staircase is not just a connection between two parts of the city; it is a significant mark of Hradec architecture. It is our responsibility to preserve such places with respect, while also ensuring they serve current and future generations," stated the deputy mayor for property Pavel Vrbický (Pirates).
Various cultural and sporting events also take place at the staircase, such as the Gočár Steps cycling race. "The city has informed the organizers of large events that are routed across the staircase about the start of the project, and they will discuss further steps together," the spokesperson stated.
