Brno – Brno city councilors unanimously supported the construction of a new football stadium at Lužánky during today’s meeting. This followed an appeal and speech from fans of Zbrojovka, with around 20 attending the council session. City officials recently met with the club's new owner, Vojtěch Kačena, but did not disclose any details or preferences. Kačena aims to build a stadium for 30,000 spectators without using public funds, precisely at Lužánky.
The councilors approved a resolution stating that they support Kačena's intention, provided it is legally and technically feasible.
Football has not been played at Lužánky for nearly a quarter of a century, and the ruin of the old stadium is set to be demolished soon. The city decided in the recent past to finally abandon the location due to prolonged disputes with businessman Libor Procházka over the land in the area, which are still ongoing in court. Based on a study, it was decided that a football stadium would eventually be built near the exhibition grounds, and for this reason, plans were made to demolish the velodrome, which has provided a long-standing base for track cyclists.
Kačena arrived at Zbrojovka only in the second half of August, but he has already made a strong impact in discussions about the new stadium. He is willing to settle property disputes with Procházka and construct the stadium. "This is a complete paradigm shift regarding stadium construction. It opens up the possibility to cut the Gordian knot, and Kačena has the sword. He can resolve the disputes with Procházka, thereby unlocking the location, which Brno has failed to do for 20 years," said Martin Štefka on behalf of Zbrojovka fans during the council meeting. According to him, all the locations Brno has considered were more out of necessity than choice.
The area around Lužánky holds great significance for sports fans in Brno; they have attended both football and hockey matches there for decades. It is a location with good transport connections and a sufficiently large space for the facilities that modern sports venues require. However, hockey players will not return here since a new hockey stadium is under construction at the exhibition grounds near the Pisárky tram depot after many years.
Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) announced that a working group will be formed to resolve as quickly as possible which location is most suitable, and that if feasible, the location at Lužánky will be prioritized.
