The exhibition Buildings and Projects presents the latest projects of three prominent architectural studios from Brno that have made their mark on the identity of various places in the Czech Republic with their distinctive styles. Besides Brno, their projects can also be found in Litomyšl, Prague, Ostrava, as well as in suburban areas or villages.
Architects Aleš Burian, Gustav Křivinka, Petr Pelčák, Tomáš Rusín and Ivan Wahla do not operate in the same studio, but their professional collaboration and friendship date back to the 1980s when they met in Brno during their studies. After graduating from the Faculty of Architecture in Brno, they all started working at the Brno Stavoprojekt under the guidance of architect Viktor Rudiš. Perhaps it was the frequent discussions about architecture that took place there that inspired them to establish the association Obecní dům in 1988 with other Brno and Prague colleagues. This association became an important platform for theoretical discussions about architecture and after 1989, it oversaw exhibitions that mapped selected themes and personalities from both the past and present of architecture.
In practice, the creators primarily collaborated on large urban projects in Brno. In the early 1990s, these included a project for the South Center, a competition for Mendl's Square, or the winning design for the Kamechy residential quarter in Bystrc. Individual construction contracts, however, began to emerge separately. All three studios started together, from the same position, at the same time, and in the same place. The exhibition allows viewers to compare them with one another and may also answer the question of whether the friendship among architects brings shared features to their works.
"Their work elevates the character of Czech architecture, enhances our surroundings, and thus also us, who can be both spectators and participants in their buildings," says the exhibition curator Martina Straková.
With this project, the MG begins the independent exhibition activity of the space called since the reopening of the Museum of Applied Arts after its renovation in 2001 Respirium. The Moravian Gallery in Brno plans to dedicate this space to applied arts, design, and partly also architecture from the early 20th century to the present.
The opening of the exhibition is accompanied by the introduction of three catalogs dedicated to the work of each of the trio of studios over a longer time horizon. The catalog was created in collaboration with leading European art theorist, editor-in-chief of the architectural magazine TEC21, Judit Solt.

"Even though the Moravian Gallery does not have a separate collection of architecture, we consider the presentation of architectural works in an art-historical context to be essential and important. This strategy is related on one hand to the broadening of the very understanding of the concept of architecture and to the increasingly frequent blending of the boundaries of traditional artistic disciplines, and on the other hand, it captures the transformations of curatorial and gallery work, the subjects of which today also include buildings, projects, and models. We perceive and present them not only as documents of forms and design processes but also as contributions to the history of architectural thought."

Aleš Burian and Gustav Křivinka founded the Burian-Křivinka architectural office in 1991. They became known primarily as creators of healthcare (Acute Medicine Pavilion at the Mercy Brothers Hospital in Brno, PET - Center of Masaryk Oncology Institute in Brno) and educational facilities (Hygiene Pavilion of the VFU in Brno). They received an Honorary Award in the GRAND PRIX of the Association of Architects of the Czech Republic for the realization of the Geodis Brno Administrative Building and the Elementary School and Municipal Sports Hall in Litomyšl. In their realizations, they emphasize clear material solutions, but often lighten the final form through the use of transparent materials, achieving remarkable tension. Currently, the studio operates with Aleš Burian, Gustav Křivinka, Pavel Havelka, Radka Neumanová, Lukáš Roubal, Ondřej Kubla, Veronika Mikulíková, and Mirka Zadražilová.

Petr Pelčák led the architectural office Ateliér Brno jointly with Petr Hrůša for many years (1998-2008). Through the reconstruction of Denis Gardens or the construction of the Vaňkovka Gallery, they influenced the appearance of Brno and also left their mark on the identities of other cities. Under the name Ateliér Brno, they also created the design for the reconstruction of the Birth House of Josef Hoffmann in Brtnice, which is managed by the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Their joint projects have received numerous awards. Since 2008, Petr Pelčák has been independently leading the studio Pelčák and Partner Architects, which consists of Rastislav Balog, Mirka Blechová, Michaela Brychtová, Šárka Justová, Michaela Kasková, Jakub Kovářík, Viktor Kvita, Lenka Musilová, Petr Pelčák, Petr Uhrín, David Vahala, Lenka Vořechovská, and Zbyněk Zavřel. The studio is engaged in projects for residential buildings, administrative buildings, and urban planning. The architectural work of Petr Pelčák is characterized by simplicity and economy; the geometric form he arrives at is also ornamental. A significant emphasis is also placed on material, detail, and its processing.

Tomáš Rusín and Ivan Wahla have been working under the name RAW since 1990. Through their numerous café projects (Café Blau, Café Onyx, Café Steiner) and portals, they contribute to co-creating urban facades. They also successfully engage in reconstructions (Health Insurance Company of the Ministry of the Interior in Brno on Cejl, Department Store Petrov in Brno). Attention is also deserved for their designs for family houses (family house in Mokrá hora, villas in Jundrov and in Kamechy). Tomáš Rusín is also known to the public as a creator of scenographic solutions in theaters in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Many of their realizations have been awarded in the GRAND PRIX of the Association of Architects of the Czech Republic and other awards. At first glance, their sober projects openly reference interwar modern forms, captivating with their choice of materials, subtle details, and quality of execution. The studio currently operates with Tomáš Rusín, Ivan Wahla, Petr Mutina, Lukáš Vágner, Lenka Brychtová, and Libor Šupler.
