The city of Trenčín is seeking the best comprehensive urban planning solution to connect the city center with the river and utilize the space that will be transformed after the modernization and relocation of the railway line. The outcome of the solution should be a compact, vibrant city with a secure connection to water.
Trenčín is currently facing changes related to the relocation of the railway line in the direct city center, which is taking place as part of the modernization of the European railway corridor, with a planned completion by 2016.
Therefore, through a competition, the city is looking for fresh and innovative urban solutions that will overcome transportation barriers, connect the historic center with both banks of the Váh River, and breathe new life and development impetus into the city. The winning designs will form the basis for a new Land Use Plan for the central city zone, which the city will develop based on the results of the competition.
The city announced the international conceptual competition on January 31, 2014. A website www.2014.trencin.sk has been launched, where interested parties can register until March 4, 2014, regardless of whether they plan to submit a competition proposal or not. The deadline for submitting competition proposals is April 24, 2014.
“One of the materials that the city commissioned for this occasion is a physical model of the central city zone, which already incorporates the new railway bridge over the Váh River and the relocated railway line,” says Martin Beďatš, head of the chief architect's department.
The model consists of detachable parts so that the winning design, which will be selected by an international jury in June, can later be processed and easily inserted into the existing model. During February, the model will be displayed in the City Clubroom located within the Cultural and Information Center on Mierové námestie.
The purpose of the competition is to develop Trenčín as the best place to live in Slovakia and a city known worldwide.
“I wish all the competitors and international teams involved in addressing the central city zone good fortune, inspiration, and an open mind. I hope they will be even better than what Mr. Ferdinand Silberstein-Silvan left us over seventy years ago, such an incredible timeless urban work that is Sihoť,” says the mayor of the city, Richard Rybníček, who confirmed the start of the competition with his signature.
