Bernardo Bader Architects, Bregenz „At university, we were often told that we must take a stance and defend it consistently. They convinced us that as an architect, you can only be successful if you are extremely strict with the investor – the architect as a lone warrior for higher goals. But I soon realized that collaborating with people is extraordinarily important and that they must be taken very seriously.“ Bernardo Bader is part of the younger generation of architects continuing the tradition of the so-called Vorarlberg School of Architecture, which was formed in the 1970s and 1980s around studios such as Zumthor, Baumschlager & Eberle, Marte.Marte, and Dietrich | Untertrifaller. However, Bader pushes local architectural heritage further and combines it with a more open, international perspective. For more than two decades, he has been combining a deep awareness of regional identity with precise space design based on authenticity. His work is characterized by a refined use of materials and craftsmanship precision in every detail. In Bader's approach – „to search instead of to invent“ – the specific conditions of the site and society are reflected, leading to what he himself calls „non-transferable architecture“. For his work, he has received several prestigious awards, including the Piranesi Award and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The inclusion of his work in the monographic publication series El Croquis is also evidence that Bernardo Bader belongs to the remarkable personalities of the contemporary international scene.
