Brno – A construction company is completing the first phase of a large-scale renovation at the Central Cemetery in Brno, amounting to approximately 300 million crowns. The work in the area between the honor circle and the ceremony hall has been ongoing since last spring. So far, workers have built a new drainage system, utilities, and retention tanks. They have also updated the honor circle, where new trees have been planted. Currently, they are removing asphalt from the paths, which will be replaced with permeable surfaces by July at the latest. This was announced today by the cemetery administration director, Alena Říhová. Repairs are also set to begin this year at other cemeteries in Brno.

The goal of the work, which is planned to last in phases until 2029 at the Central Cemetery, is to significantly improve rainwater management. Currently, it flows away without being utilized. The area of impermeable surfaces is to be reduced by 61 percent, which is the maximum amount to maintain the operational needs of the cemetery as well as heritage protection conditions. The retained water will be used for irrigation of trees and other vegetation. "Last year, the workers managed quite a lot; despite initial difficulties, the work was handled well. About two weeks ago, the company began with the second phase from the honor circle to Jihlavská street,” the director stated.

The work essentially includes the same as the first phase, namely the repair of paths, revitalization of greenery, and modification of utility networks. "However, it might be more complicated, as the construction will impact the main access route. A priority is to ensure that funeral services with coffins and people with reduced mobility can access the cemetery. It might be a challenge for the contractors at times, but they have to manage," added Říhová. This phase should be completed in the fall without the seeding of grass and planting of trees.

The replacement of asphalt paths with permeable surfaces is also being planned by the contribution organization at other cemeteries. In Královo Pole, there is a construction permit for the project and the search for a contractor is underway. The plan there also includes the repair of water lines and a boundary wall, which is collapsed in places. Columbariums and a scattering meadow are also to be created there. Říhová estimates that work could start in March and be completed by All Souls' Day. In Řečkovice, the cemetery administration is waiting for the issuance of a permit. After that, work will take several months. In addition, a project is being prepared for replacing the wire fencing with a brick wall in Komín, where wild boars have been entering the cemetery for the second year.
