Vyšší Brod (Českokrumlovsko) - A fire in the former monastery brewery in Vyšší Brod in the Český Krumlov area caused damage amounting to 200,000 crowns on Tuesday afternoon. The fire destroyed the entire roof of the empty and unused building. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by specialists, said South Bohemian firefighters' spokesperson Vendula Matějů today.
The fire was reported shortly after 3:30 PM by several people who called the emergency number 112. "They reported seeing smoke rising from the building in the monastery complex," the spokesperson stated. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about half an hour. A professional unit from Frymburk and volunteer firefighters from Vyšší Brod and Přířez were on the scene. They saved assets worth one million crowns.
According to available information, the brewery is one of the oldest Gothic breweries in the Czech Republic. Monks from the Cistercian monastery began brewing beer there in 1380. The building is owned by the state.
