Brno - A new sports hall will be built in Brno next year, initiated by TJ Sokol Brno-Obřany-Maloměřice. It will primarily serve the Maloměřice handball players, in the morning for the nearby elementary school, and during the remaining time for other sports clubs. Sokol estimates the total costs for construction and equipment to be around 33 million crowns. They are not worried about occupancy, as demand still exceeds supply in Brno, said Sokol's business manager Jiří Musil to ČTK today. The hall will be located where the current inflatable facility on Obřanská Street stands, which has been in use for nearly ten years. Sokol will receive a grant from the regional operational program for the construction. "The project has already been approved, and we are waiting for the signing of the grant agreement. Due to the conditions, we must have the construction completed by spring next year. As soon as possible, we will start building this year," stated Musil. The multipurpose hall will feature a field measuring 40 by 20 meters, suitable for handball, futsal, floorball, and of course, volleyball. The spectator capacity will be approximately 250 seats. The hall will primarily be used by teams from the local handball club. "Children from Hamry Elementary School will be allowed to use the hall for free, as they do not have an adequate gym. The remaining hours will be rented to other interested parties. There is a significant interest from Brno's futsal leagues, which used the inflatable hall in winter," Musil said. Brno has long lacked enough halls, and some smaller clubs host matches in the surrounding areas of Brno. This situation has not changed even with the completion of the hall near the ice hockey arenas at Lužánky last year, which is used by floorball and futsal players. "We wrote in the project that we anticipate utilizing 70% of the capacity, but it will likely be even higher, so we have no concerns. On weekends, it will be occupied from morning until evening," Musil believes. The hall is also expected to meet the parameters for hosting international championships in youth categories and may serve as a training facility during international matches.
