The roof of the panel building reportedly didn't tear off due to poor workmanship

Prague - The reason for the tearing off of the metal roof along with part of the structure from the extension of the panel house on Malkovského Street in Prague-Letňany was, according to the owner, not poorly performed work, but too strong winds. Residents who were evacuated on Saturday cannot return yet. Today, experts and representatives of construction companies, who will be carrying out repairs, will inspect the apartments, said Ivan Slavík from BPT Prague, which owns part of the building.
    After the inspection, it will be decided which apartments the residents can return to. For the severely damaged apartments, arrangements will be made for the removal of furniture so that repairs can be completed. Slavík stated that the building is insured.
    Part of the arched roof was torn off by the wind from the panel house on Saturday morning, with a piece hanging and at risk of collapsing. "The cause was certainly not poor workmanship," said Slavík. The reason for the roof's damage was the very strong wind for which it was not constructed, he added.
    People were evacuated from the last two floors of the ten-story building. In total, about forty residents were affected. No one was injured. The municipal structural engineer inspected the building on Saturday and stated that it was not compromised. However, due to the strong winds, access to the damaged part of the building was prohibited even on Sunday. The owner offered all affected individuals alternative accommodation in a hotel. Some took advantage of the offer.
    The torn-off roof of the panel house extension, along with the damaged roofs of the former sugar factory buildings in Čakovice, were the most serious consequences of the Emma storm in Prague. The sugar factory area contains various operations and accommodation facilities. In some buildings, the wind blew off the roof along with the entire framework, while from others, it removed metal sheeting or tiles.
    Firefighters in the capital intervened mainly with uprooted trees, damaged roofs, torn metal sheets, signs, awnings, and similar issues. For example, the Technical Administration of Communications estimates the damages so far at tens of thousands of crowns for uprooted traffic signs, a damaged signage portal on Průmyslová Street, and destroyed railings under which trees fell.
