Vsetín – Vsetín has completed the renovations around the castle after nine years for more than 40 million crowns. The city has beautified Horní náměstí, and there are also new access walkways along Palackého street and from Panská zahrada. This was stated in today's press release by Michal Horský from the Vsetín town hall. According to him, the Zlín Region has spent another nearly 90 million crowns on the restoration of the castle and its gardens.
The renovations of the historic area began in 2017. First, in two phases, the town repaired the sidewalks on Palackého street from the roundabout near the Snaha restaurant to Maštaliska. These works also included the reinforcement of the retaining wall under Maštalisky and stabilizing the slope above the Bečva River. "In the last five years, we have focused on the park between the castle and Maštalisky and the surrounding area of the castle," said Deputy Mayor Jiří Růžička (KDU-ČSL).
Construction workers repaired the sidewalks, service roads, the Vsetín-Horní náměstí bus stop, and the area around the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Wallachian uprisings. "We also modernized the public lighting and revitalized the greenery. The sidewalk from Bečva to the castle garden also underwent construction modifications, and we reinforced the surrounding slope with retaining walls," Růžička stated.
This year's final phase focused on the area between the castle garden and the former cultural facility in Sychrov. "Besides the usual renovations of sidewalks, greenery, and public lighting, we built new bus stop shelters for Vsetín-Sychrov and established a lit pedestrian crossing on the road between these stops, which is also divided by a safety island. A turning lane towards the Sychrov housing estate has also been added to the road leading from the castle to the traffic light intersection at U Růžičků," the Deputy Mayor added.
Work on the last phase began in mid-March and was completed in July. It required 8.7 million crowns from the city budget. "Vsetín Castle and its surroundings are a historical landmark of Vsetín. It is therefore our duty to take proper care of it and preserve it in the best possible condition as a legacy for future generations," stated Vsetín Mayor Jiří Čunek (KDU-ČSL).
The city's investments followed the reconstruction of the castle, which started in 2014 and was divided into three phases. The regional administration built new depositories and an exhibition in the castle for the Museum of the Vsetín Region it manages, and a new elevator serves visitors. The work also included the renovation of the electrical installations, restoration of historical windows, rebuilding of the castle wall, and installation of a fire protection system in the tower. The castle façade, terrace, and garden have also been restored.
