Hradec Králové

Hradec Králové - The covered staircase Bono publico in the historic center of Hradec Králové will be passable again from Friday, October 27. The first phase of the renovation of this link between Komenského street and the Great Square has been completed. Renovations will continue next year. This was reported by the spokesperson of the Hradec Králové City Hall, Petr Vinklář. The construction will be preserved over the winter.

According to the deputy mayor responsible for city property, Romana Lišková, the masonry, stairs, and floors are provisionally repaired, but everything meets the requirements for safe operation. "This year, the goal was to protect this cultural monument from moisture for the next several decades, which had relatively quickly degraded its last major reconstruction," said Lišková.

This year, builders applied and removed de-salting plaster twice, which was continuously tested in the laboratory. "The masonry also incorporates what is called electro-osmosis, a special technology against rising moisture from the substrate. In this case, it is not possible to simply undercut the structure and provide insulation," stated Jan Falta, head of the heritage preservation department at the city hall.

According to him, the staircase has changed its appearance, layout, and usage several times over the centuries and has gradually been embedded into the terrain. "It runs through the building of the Baroque bishopric, two medieval walls, and its foundations often lie outside the walls or are completely missing. The underground part of the masonry often even expands. Therefore, the restoration of the staircase is a complex technical problem. We believe that the new technology will be more effective and, above all, more durable in the endless battle against moisture," added Falta.

The costs for the first phase of repairs of the Empire-style building from 1810, which began in early July this year, are 2.36 million crowns. In the second phase of repairs, which will be financially much more demanding, the city plans to carry out new plasters, replace oak stair treads, repair landings made of oak cubes, copper cladding, or electrical installations.

"On Tuesday, the councilors will vote on the release of funds for the second phase of repairs next year, when the staircase will acquire its final form, including new lighting and a camera system,"
said Lišková. The estimated costs for the completion of the reconstruction will be up to 25 million crowns, according to her.

The Bono publico staircase is characterized by three small towers built above three landings. Originally, it connected the city with the then barracks of the Hradec fortress. Today, it forms a very busy pedestrian link between the old town and the area of secondary and higher schools.
