The Hradec Stairs Bono Publico are closed due to repairs

Hradec Králové - The closure of the Bono publico covered staircase in the historic center of Hradec Králové today marked the beginning of the second phase of the challenging renovation of this valuable building. The Empire building from 1810 is listed as a cultural monument. The historic staircase will be closed until winter, said Michal Komárek from the mayor's office to ČTK. The total cost of the renovation is nearly 23 million crowns.

During the renovations, people can use the nearby staircase at the regional office or Gočár's staircase, which is approximately 150 meters in the other direction toward the medical school. "The staircase was closed this morning. The repairs will take as long as the weather permits," said Komárek to ČTK. According to him, the closure will end with a winter construction break, and work will then continue in spring 2019.

The Bono publico staircase, which has 70 steps, is characterized by three turrets built above three resting places. Originally, it connected the town with the then barracks of the Hradec fortress. Today, it serves as a busy link between the old town and the complex of secondary and higher schools.

Last autumn, builders treated the masonry of the staircase with desalination plasters and installed a special technology against moisture rising from the substrate, known as electroosmosis.

In the second phase of renovations, the stair treads will be completely replaced, just like the originals, meaning they will be oak. Archaeologists will also uncover the masonry and foundations from the outer sides of the building, which will allow for further restoration of the monument. According to the town hall, further delays in construction are not ruled out. Builders will also create new internal and external plastering on the staircase, install new windows in the tambours above the resting places, replace copper coverings on the roofs and cornices, and lay new sandstone and granite paving. They will also make landscaping adjustments in the surroundings, install lighting, and sound systems for the building. A series of additional restoration works and measures against moisture await them. To prevent the staircase from becoming a target for vandals, a camera system connected to the municipal police will be installed there.
