Prague

Prague - 55 years ago, on February 2, 1956, the very first relocation of a building object in the country was initiated. The rescued structure was the chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene in Prague, which was threatened with destruction due to the reconstruction of the Letná embankment and the approach ramps of the Čech Bridge in connection with the construction of Stalin's monument.

The relocation project for the chapel was proposed and developed by academic Stanislav Bechyně, who was instrumental in moving the chapel 30.75 meters upstream of the Vltava River. It was a technically challenging operation, during which the chapel was first reinforced internally with a wooden structure, and steel rings then tightened it around the perimeter. It was also underpinned with a reinforced concrete ring. After that, it was moved to a pre-prepared site along a track with railways for transport carts and with the help of a pushing device and reconstructed.
The chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene, which was built in 1635 for the proost of the Cyriak monastery on the former monastic vineyard under Letná, originally stood very close to the Svatopluk Čech Bridge. In 1956, however, it was to be sacrificed for the planned staircase to the notoriously infamous monument.
The building, with its dome, turret, small windows, and impressive frescoes by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista de Barrifis, had a colorful history. In the final phase of the Thirty Years' War, it was occupied by the Swedish army, and in 1783, it was abolished by Emperor Joseph II. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the chapel primarily served as a storage facility. It was reconsecrated in 1908 when the city of Prague took care of it, having cleaned and repaired it, and then granted it to the Old Catholic Church.
