Prague - The capital city will have a concept developed for the area surrounding Národní street, 28. října, Jungmann square, Na Příkopě, Republic Square, and Revoluční, which in the past were located along the old town walls. The concept assignment was approved today by Prague councilors. The study aims to propose modifications that will improve the area's accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists and transform it into a cohesive urban boulevard. This will also include, among other things, restrictions on car traffic.

According to the assignment, the goal of the project is to expand the main shopping promenade in the center, which today stretches from Jungmann square to Republic Square, up to Legií bridge on one side and Štefánik bridge on the other. The approved study will serve as a foundation for developing specific proposals for individual locations that follow the former city walls.

The entire area, according to the document, suffers from a lack of benches and bike racks, even though a major cycling route runs through it. Car traffic should be restricted under the Powder Gate, which, according to the document, significantly contributes to the congestion of Revoluční Street, where around 25,000 cars pass daily. "Further restrictions on car traffic could concern Na Příkopech street, Národní boulevard in the section from Na Perštýně to Perlová," the assignment states.

A similar study, which is to be created for the central urban promenade, was approved by the previous council last year for the area known as the Letná Cross, which includes Veletržní and Dukelských hrdinů streets and parts of Strojnická and U Výstaviště streets. The study includes modifications of sidewalks, crossings, bus stops, and the planting of nearly 200 trees. The work is expected to be completed in 2022, in connection with the planned reconstruction of the tram line, and is estimated to cost 762 million crowns.
