"Letenský kříž", meaning the intersection of Veletržní Street and Dukelských hrdinů, is set for changes. In connection with the planned reconstruction of the tram line, the appearance of the public spaces here will also change. The focus will be mainly on increasing comfort for tram passengers, better conditions for pedestrians, and adding tree alignments. The proposals can be seen at an exhibition in front of the Veletržní Palace, and people can express their opinions on the planned changes.
The conceptual study for the future appearance of Letenský kříž is being developed by the Institute of Planning and Development of Prague (IPR) at the request of the Prague Public Transit Company and the local district of Prague 7. In the coming years, the local tram line will be reconstructed due to its obsolescence, which presents an opportunity for a complete transformation of the street space. The concept addresses part of Dukelských hrdinů Street (between Milady Horákové - Strojnická), Veletržní Street (from Letenské náměstí to Bubenská), and also the area adjacent to Strojnická Street.
"Dukelských hrdinů Street, like Veletržní, is already a busy commercial thoroughfare. With the opening of the Blanka tunnel, there is now an opportunity for their overall rehabilitation," says Ondřej Boháč, appointed director of IPR Prague.
Dukelských hrdinů Street, formerly known as Bělská třída, was one of the main boulevards of Prague 7. Historically, it was a route from the original Písecká Gate in Malá Strana to the Royal Game Reserve. To this day, the street serves as a main connection between the embankment, the Exhibition Grounds, and Stromovka Park. Veletržní Street acts as a traffic artery for Prague 7, housing several significant buildings. In the past, there were considerations for linking Veletržní with Dělnická Street. This idea is now актуал and urban studies for the development of the Holešovice-Bubny area include their connection.
"Construction modifications and the overall improvement of both streets can contribute to the opening of new establishments and encourage restaurant operators to set up outdoor dining areas. The cultivation of public space can support local businesses and increase the sense of safety," says Petra Kolínská, Deputy Mayor for Urban Development.
The conceptual study anticipates the construction of new pedestrian crossings and the modification of existing ones, ensuring their accessibility. As part of the reconstruction, tram stops and sidewalks will be adjusted. Plans include the addition of street furniture and underground containers for separated waste. Urban planners are also examining conditions for adding tree alignments.
People can express their opinions on the current version of the conceptual study at www.iprpraha.cz/letenskykriz until Sunday, November 6.
