Ostrava - The reconstruction of the so-called Ostrava skyscraper, which stands 68 meters tall, should begin in the center of the regional city no later than the end of summer. The investor has already obtained a building permit. The architect and project manager Veronika Schemmer informed ČTK about this today. The design for the reconstruction of the high-rise building was prepared by the studio of the world-renowned architect Eva Jiřičná. The skyscraper is expected to be completed within three years.
During the reconstruction of the building from the second half of the 1960s, 111 apartments ranging from 30 to 203 square meters will be created across 24 floors, with layouts from 1+kk to 4+kk. Each apartment will have a cellar compartment, and it will also be possible to purchase a parking space in a separate parking garage. The revitalization will also include landscaping of the surroundings, where a leisure zone will be created. Even before obtaining the building permit, dozens of apartments were reserved.
The investor of the construction is the company First Skyscraper, with which the city signed a contract for the sale of land and the building in 2024. In the first phase, the builders will strip the building down to its skeleton. The reconstruction will also allow for the addition of terraces, which will be planted with greenery and will have an automatic irrigation system.
The Ostrava skyscraper was built according to the design of Jan Slezák between 1965 and 1968 as part of the Jindřiška housing estate. It originally served as a residential building. However, after a few years, the building was transformed into an office building. Due to technical problems, the building has been empty since 2013. City representatives then long considered its future, and demolition was even threatened. The main shortcomings of the building are non-functional cladding and unsatisfactory safety parameters. For example, escape routes are problematic.
The city first selected an investor for the reconstruction back in 2022, but the interested party ultimately did not sign the relevant contracts for the purchase of the properties. The city then had to look for a new one. Therefore, in October 2023, the city announced the intention to sell the building. Two interested parties submitted offers.
