Ústí nad Labem - The city of Ústí nad Labem will demolish the unfinished sector center, which has stood in the North Terrace district for over 20 years. The land will then be offered to investors. City councilors today decided to include the demolition of the building among projects that the city should fund from money obtained from the regional operational program. The removal of the large ruin, according to Mayor Jan Kubata, is enabled by a recent court decision that returned the sector center to the city after years of disputes. The city hall was in a legal battle with the investor who acquired the building in the 1990s and wanted to convert it into a shopping center. However, that plan did not materialize. In recent years, metal collectors have been dismantling the building, and homeless people often slept there. The city estimates that the demolition of the building will cost around 50 million crowns. According to the mayor, the final amount will be determined by the tender process. It will also depend on what type of waste is produced from the demolition, as the presence of hazardous materials would increase the cost. Kubata added that the city wants to demolish the sector center as soon as possible. In addition to the demolition, the councilors also approved today that they want to use funds from the operational program to pay for the revitalization of the city center for 188 million crowns, a cable car to Větruša costing 75 million crowns, the construction of a home for the elderly costing 102 million crowns, and modifications to the city hall building and atrium for 62 million crowns. At the beginning of September, Ústí nad Labem successfully presented its integrated city development plan and will receive a grant of 917 million crowns from the North-West Regional Operational Program. Kubata stated that the city leadership is currently negotiating how the funds will flow into the city treasury. If necessary, he did not rule out the possibility that the city would take out a loan or increase its overdraft with banks to have enough money for the constructions before the approved amount from Brussels arrives.
