Ústí nad Labem

Ústí nad Labem - A sports complex is set to be established at the site of the unfinished commercial and administrative center in Ústí nad Labem. The city has demolished the ruin in the Northern Terrace district for over 83 million crowns. The complex, where residents of Ústí could spend their leisure time, is estimated to cost around 57 million crowns. The city will attempt to secure funding from European funds and the Ústí region to cover the costs. This was decided by the councilors.

The unfinished center stood near the regional hospital for over 20 years. The city government tried for a long time to do something with it, litigating against the investor who acquired the building in the 1990s and wanted to renovate it. However, his plan did not succeed. Metal scrap collectors disassembled parts of the building, and homeless people often slept there. The court case ended in 2008.
As part of the city development plan, a sports and leisure complex could be created at the site of the former massive structure. It is currently unclear when the residents of Ústí will see this come to fruition. The indebted city wants the European Union to cover 85 percent of the costs. Thus, the city would pay 8.5 million crowns, with half of that potentially covered by the Ústí region. The councilors did not reach an agreement on what will happen if the city does not secure the funds.
