Plzeň - Plzeň will have a new athletic stadium in the middle of next year for about 100 million crowns. At the same time, next year it will renovate the city sports hall Lokomotiva for handball, basketball, and cultural events for 50 million crowns. This was said by Deputy Mayor Petr Rund (ODS) to ČTK. Both projects are funded by the city hall from its budget.

The athletic complex disappeared from Štruncovy sady in the center of Plzeň due to the reconstruction of the football stadium, which shifted the field towards the main stand. Its replacement is being built in the outskirts of Skvrňany. "There is a completed track, and now the facilities and a 120-meter winter tunnel are being constructed so that by the middle of next year, the stadium will be complete and serve as an adequate replacement for the stadium in Štruncovy sady," Rund stated.
The athletes still have their winter training in Štruncovy sady, but in the summer they already train on the new 400-meter tartan oval with eight lanes, built according to the requirements of the international athletics federation. In the internal grass area, there are sectors for long jumpers, pole vaulters, high jumpers, discus throwers, hammer throwers, and javelin throwers. The ongoing second phase includes a new stand for 800 spectators with changing rooms, a gym, recovery spaces, and parking. A special tunnel will allow athletes to train even in winter.
The new complex will be the property of the city, which has already signed a lease agreement with the athletics club. There was also an agreement signed with the region that the stadium will also be used by the neighboring regional vocational school.
The city will spend another 50 million crowns on the reconstruction of the load-bearing structure of the sports hall from 1974, where handball and basketball matches are held and concerts and exhibitions are organized. "The entire roof, including the sides of the hall, will be replaced, and only the floor and seats will remain," Rund said. The heating, electrical systems, and ventilation will also be repaired. The repair is planned to minimally conflict with the needs of the athletes. They will still be able to use outdoor sports facilities and a second training hall.
"A tender for the contractor is underway," Rund said. The reconstruction is expected to start in the spring and be completed by autumn. Two years ago, the city had to close the hall for three weeks due to poor structural integrity. At that time, the city provisionally managed the emergency condition and placed 14 steel columns in the second row of the audience to support the wooden trusses of the structure.
Plzeň invests 55 million crowns per year into the operation of its sports facilities. The largest expenses are incurred by the swimming complex in Slovany, amounting to 23.2 million crowns. The complex in Štruncovy sady, primarily the football stadium, costs 16 million, while the winter stadium costs 800,000 crowns less, the Lokomotiva hall costs 5.2 million, the athletic stadium costs 1.8 million, and the hockey ball hall costs 1.1 million crowns.
